It’s been a while since our last visit in Misamis Occidental and it was really fun at that time. We missed some tourist attractions and destinations during that visit because we don’t have enough time. We visited Misamis Occidental this year and we stay at Ozamiz City and we found out the famous house in Ozamiz City, the House of Suman of Clarin.
Ozamiz City is one of the cities in Misamis Occidental that you could found heritage houses and churches. With this heritage of Mindanao, tourists love to visit Misamis Occidental. John The Baptist also known as Jimenez Church is one of the popular tourist attraction to visit in Ozamiz City. The church located at Brgy. Poblacion Jimenez, Misamis Occidental and it’s a late 19th-century church. This century-old Spanish Catholic church features rustic interiors adorned with painted ceilings that date back to 1800s.
This church catches our attention and we decided to stop over to investigate the name of this church. This is the oldest church in town name after this place, Jimenez Church. We have only limited time to explore John the Baptist church because we heading to Villa Tagalog Beach Resort. It was Sunday and during our visits to the church the mass is going on so we don’t have the chance to explore inside the church. It’s not appropriate to go inside the church with ongoing mass and with a swimming attire..lol
The church is like a European style of architecture and made up of sand and coral stones is one of the oldest and most well-preserved churches in the Philippines. It is nice to see this kind of heritage places in our county wherein you can feel how these building being part of our history.
National Cultural Treasures
The Jimenez Church declared one of the country’s National Cultural Treasures last 2001. The creation of the church structure is attributed to Father Roque Azcona between the years 1862 to 1863. The church believed to have been completed in the late 1880s.
San Juan Bautista Parish Church Interior
Aside on the European style of architecture of the Jimenez church, you will more like the interior of this John The Baptist of Jimenez because the interiors of the church are reportedly one of the best-preserved interiors of a Roman Catholic church in Mindanao. It features a painting done in 1898 and portions made of tabique Pampango, a local version of drywall using panels of interwoven slats or branches and covered with lime.
