After we explore the amazing Mile Long Barracks our tour guide brings us the only historic tower in Corregidor Island and they called it Spanish Lighthouse. It is located at the highest point of Corregidor Island, the Old Spanish lighthouse gives one a breathtaking view of Corregidor Island, Manila Bay, and its periphery. The light station was one of the most important lights in the archipelago. The Spaniards used the island as a fortress of defense, a penal institution, a signal outpost, and a station for customs inspection.
In 1897, the lighthouse was being replaced by a much bigger lighthouse but was later destroyed during the outbreak of World War II when Filipino and American soldiers held out for months in Corregidor.
The establishment of a lighthouse station on the Island of Corregidor was recommended in the year 1835 during the administration of Governor Pascual Enrile y Alcedo. The lighthouse was not completed until 1853 – eighteen years after the recommendation of its construction had been made.
At the observation deck, one can see the breathtaking view of Corregidor, Manila Bay, South China Sea, and the provinces of Bataan and Cavite. From the perch near the structure’s top, Mt. Mariveles can be seen to the North, and Batangas to the South. If you’re lucky enough, on exceptionally clear days you can actually see the skyline of Metro Manila.
Before going at the top viewing deck of the lighthouse inside the Spanish Lighthouse is a Spanish Museum.
